eattle Storm to Unveil Sue Bird Statue, Making WNBA History

SEATTLE – The Seattle Storm and Climate Pledge Arena have announced a historic tribute: a statue of legendary WNBA icon Sue Bird will be unveiled outside the arena on August 17, making the Storm the first WNBA franchise to honor a former player with a statue.

The official unveiling is set for Sunday, August 17, at 10:00 a.m. on the West Plaza of Climate Pledge Arena. The event will feature remarks from Storm leadership, city officials, and Sue Bird herself, celebrating not just an extraordinary athlete but a transformative leader whose legacy extends far beyond the basketball court.

“Sue’s legacy isn’t just written in championships—it’s woven into the fabric of Seattle,” said Storm President & CEO Alisha Valavanis. “Her leadership transcended basketball and helped shape a cultural shift—one that expanded who gets to lead, who gets seen, and who gets celebrated.”

Sue Bird, who spent her entire 21-year WNBA career with the Storm, is one of the most decorated and respected players in basketball history. She has become a symbol of excellence, resilience, and leadership—qualities that have inspired generations both in Seattle and around the world.

“For over two decades, the city of Seattle supported me, both on and off the court. It’s because of this community that Seattle will forever hold a special place in my heart,” Bird said. “This statue isn’t just for me; it’s for anyone out there hoping to one day pursue their passions and live out their dreams. I’m thankful to the Storm and Seattle for this honor, and can’t wait to celebrate with my family, friends, and our amazing fans this August.”

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell added, “Sue Bird is not just one of the greatest basketball players of all time—she is a transformative figure in Seattle’s history and a symbol of what it means to lead with purpose, courage, and heart. This new statue is a fitting tribute to a champion and icon who has helped shape the identity of our city.”

The celebration doesn’t end with the unveiling. Fans are invited to a free community fan fest starting at noon, leading up to the “Forever Sue” game against the Phoenix Mercury at 3:00 p.m. The first 7,500 fans in attendance will receive a special drawing of Bird by local artist Keegan Hall.

Crafted by renowned sculptor Julie Rotblatt-Amrany, Bird’s statue will stand alongside Seattle’s most iconic sports monuments, immortalizing her impact on the city and the game.

Further details about the event will be shared in the coming weeks. For now, Seattle gets ready to honor a legend whose influence will inspire generations to come.
