BREAKING NEWS! Elon Musk considers distributing $5,000 checks to American taxpayers using savings from his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative. Could this really happen?
In a bold new proposal, Elon Musk is considering sending $5,000 checks to American households, funded by government savings his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) claims to have achieved. The idea, which Musk teased on Twitter/X Tuesday, could become reality if DOGE hits its ambitious $2 trillion savings target.
Musk responded to a suggestion from James Fishback, CEO of the right-leaning investment firm Azoria, who calculated that distributing 20% of $2 trillion in savings would mean a $5,000 windfall for every household in the country. Fishback proposed that these “DOGE Dividend” checks could be issued after the program expires next July.
DOGE, launched under Musk’s leadership, has positioned itself as a budget-slashing task force aiming to rein in federal spending and reduce the national deficit. According to its website, DOGE has already racked up $55 billion in savings—a figure that has sparked skepticism. Investigations by outlets like The New York Times have revealed that some of DOGE’s headline numbers are inflated; one claim of $8 billion in savings, for example, was reportedly just $8 million.
Despite the controversy, the prospect of a $5,000 check is sure to excite millions of Americans. However, there are significant obstacles standing in the way. Even if DOGE manages to hit its $2 trillion target, it’s unclear whether the executive branch could distribute such rebates without Congressional approval. While Congress has often followed President Donald Trump’s lead, some lawmakers would rather use any savings to pay down the national debt or extend expiring tax cuts.
Adding to the intrigue, Musk himself has previously criticized government stimulus programs. In a 2021 interview with Time magazine, he remarked, “I think the government is inherently not a good steward of capital.”
As the debate heats up, one thing is clear: Musk’s “DOGE Dividend” proposal has captured the public’s imagination—but whether it will ever become reality remains to be seen.
