Trump Calls Newsom ‘Grossly Incompetent’ and Suggests His Arrest Amid LA Unrest

Former President Donald Trump has ignited a political firestorm after publicly calling California Governor Gavin Newsom “grossly incompetent” and suggesting he should be arrested. The sharp exchange comes as Los Angeles grapples with widespread protests and heated debate over immigration enforcement.

Trump: “I’d Have Newsom Arrested”

On Monday, Trump didn’t hold back when asked by Fox News’ Peter Doocy about the escalating situation in Los Angeles. Standing on the White House lawn, Trump declared, “If I were Tom Homan, I’d have Gavin Newsom arrested. I’d do it if I were Tom.” He continued, “Gavin likes the publicity. But honestly, he’s done a terrible job.”

Despite the harsh words, Trump admitted, “I like Gavin Newsom. He’s a nice guy, but he’s grossly incompetent. Everybody knows it. Just look at the little railroad he’s building—hundreds of times over budget. We’re putting up a flagpole over there, under budget. I always come in under budget.”

Newsom Fires Back: “A Line We Cannot Cross”

Governor Newsom wasted no time in responding, taking to social media with a forceful rebuttal:

“The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America. I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican—this is a line we cannot cross as a nation. This is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”

Turmoil in Los Angeles

The political clash comes against the backdrop of intense anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. Outrage erupted after reports surfaced of ICE agents appearing at elementary school graduations, disrupting immigration proceedings at courthouses, and conducting aggressive workplace raids. These incidents have galvanized residents and triggered widespread demonstrations across LA County.

When pressed about the unrest, Trump didn’t mince words: “The people causing the problem are professional agitators. They’re insurrectionists. They’re bad people. They should be in jail.”

Legal Showdown Looms

Earlier in the day, Newsom announced plans to sue Trump over the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles. In an exclusive interview with FOX 11’s Elex Michaelson, Newsom blasted Trump as “reckless” and “immoral,” accusing him of acting unlawfully and endangering lives. “It’s my job to clean up Donald Trump’s mess, because he’s making it by the hour,” Newsom said.

Trump Doubles Down

On his Truth Social platform, Trump ramped up his criticism of both Governor Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass:

“If Governor Gavin Newscum and Mayor Karen Bass can’t do their jobs—which everyone knows they can’t—then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, riots and looters, the way it should be solved.”

He continued, painting a dire picture of the city:

“A once great American city, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by illegal aliens and criminals. Now violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our federal agents to try and stop our deportation operations. But these lawless riots only strengthen our resolve. I am directing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi to take all necessary action to liberate Los Angeles from the migrant invasion and restore order. The illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free.”

A Nation at a Crossroads

The escalating war of words between Trump and Newsom underscores deep divisions over immigration, law enforcement, and the limits of presidential power. With both sides digging in, the nation watches as California’s crisis becomes a flashpoint in America’s ongoing political drama.
