Bryce Young and Diontae Johnson: The Key to the Panthers’ Success? Analyze the impact of the quarterback-receiver duo on the Panthers’ performance and what their chemistry could mean for the team’s future.

Bryce Young Finds Chemistry with Tetairoa McMillan, While Xavier Legette Connection Still Falters
Last season, the Carolina Panthers had high hopes that rookie wide receiver Xavier Legette would become Bryce Young’s go-to playmaker. Instead, the duo struggled to get on the same page, plagued by missed timing, injuries, and a lack of chemistry that was hard to ignore. Legette’s absence due to injury and Young’s brief benching didn’t help matters, but even with a fresh start in 2025, their connection remains elusive.
According to ESPN’s David Newton, the problem persists. “The chemistry with McMillan hasn’t spilled over to 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette. Young was intercepted on one attempt to the former South Carolina standout and missed him completely on a crossing route over the middle,” Newton reported. It’s a troubling trend that echoes last year’s frustrations: Legette sometimes isn’t where Young expects him to be, and Young often can’t deliver the ball to Legette’s sweet spot.

While time and reps usually mend such issues, the clock is ticking, and the Panthers can’t afford another season of misfires between their young quarterback and his supposed top weapon.
In stark contrast, rookie Tetairoa McMillan has been a revelation. From the moment he stepped onto the field, McMillan seemed to speak Young’s language. “Almost every time Bryce Young and the offense appeared to struggle during Wednesday’s joint practice against the Cleveland Browns, the third-year quarterback seemed to find 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan for a big completion,” Newton noted.
There was even a near-touchdown connection—only a rare one-handed drop kept McMillan from scoring. Head coach Dave Canales praised Young’s ball placement on the play, highlighting the trust already forming between the two.

For Carolina fans, the emergence of McMillan as Young’s favorite target is an exciting development. But the lingering disconnect with Legette remains a concern. If the Panthers want their offense to reach its full potential, they’ll need Young and Legette to finally get in sync. Until then, all eyes will be on the budding partnership between Young and McMillan—a bright spot in an otherwise uncertain passing attack.
