SpaceX’s Starship Rocket Erupts in Fiery Explosion, Marking Latest Setback for Musk’s Mars Ambitions

In a dramatic spectacle lighting up the Texas night, SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket erupted into a fireball late Wednesday, dealing another blow to Elon Musk’s dreams of interplanetary travel.

The explosion occurred around 11:00 p.m. local time at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Brownsville, Texas, as the Starship prototype prepared for its tenth test flight. The incident, captured in a viral video, showed the 400-foot (122-meter) tall rocket engulfed in flames, sending debris hurtling into the sky in at least two thunderous blasts.

SpaceX quickly confirmed that all personnel were safe and attributed the disaster to a “major anomaly.” According to a statement posted on Musk’s social media platform X, preliminary analysis points to the failure of a nitrogen Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel (COPV) in the payload bay—a first for this design, Musk noted.

Engineering teams are now working alongside local, state, and federal agencies to investigate the cause and assess any environmental or safety impacts.

This latest setback adds to a string of high-profile failures for the Starship program in 2025. Just last month, another Starship prototype spun out of control mid-flight, falling short of key testing objectives. Earlier this year, two other attempts ended in spectacular explosions, raining debris over the Caribbean and forcing airliners to reroute.

Elon Musk has vowed to take humans to Mars.

In March, a Starship rocket broke apart in space minutes after launch, scattering fragments over South Florida and the Bahamas. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily halted air traffic in parts of Florida and required SpaceX to implement eight corrective actions before resuming test flights.

Despite these challenges, SpaceX remains undeterred in its quest to build a fully reusable rocket capable of carrying humans to Mars. Each failure, Musk insists, is a learning opportunity pushing the boundaries of engineering and human ambition.

As investigations continue, the world watches closely—wondering when, or if, SpaceX’s Starship will finally soar beyond its fiery trials and make history among the stars.
