Elon Musk thinks surgical robots may surpass many human procedures in accuracy—exciting, worrying, or both?

Elon Musk Sparks Global Debate: Will Robots Soon Outperform the World’s Best Surgeons?
Never one to shy away from controversy, Elon Musk has once again set the internet ablaze, boldly claiming that robots will soon surpass even the most skilled human surgeons. In a striking post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk responded to entrepreneur Mario Nawfal with a jaw-dropping prediction: “Robots will surpass good human surgeons within a few years, and the best human surgeons within ~5 years.”
Musk’s remarks were triggered by a report highlighting Medtronic’s revolutionary Hugo robotic surgery system. He went on to explain that Neuralink—his own brain-computer interface company—already depends on robots for inserting electrodes into human brains, as no human hand can match the speed and precision required for such delicate procedures.
While Musk’s vision of a future dominated by robotic surgeons quickly made headlines, it also sparked fierce backlash from the medical community. Many experts warned that his predictions are not only premature but could be dangerously misleading.

The report that prompted Musk’s comment detailed Medtronic’s latest clinical trials with the Hugo system, spanning 137 surgeries on prostates, kidneys, and bladders. According to RTTNews, the results were nothing short of impressive.
Complication rates for the Hugo system were dramatically lower than traditional benchmarks: just 3.7% for prostate surgeries, 1.9% for kidneys, and 17.9% for bladders—all outperforming historical safety goals. Hugo’s overall success rate stood at a staggering 98.5%, far surpassing the targeted 85% threshold.
Only two procedures had to revert to traditional methods—one due to a technical glitch, and another because of patient-related complications. The Hugo system’s triumph signals that robotic surgery is no longer a distant dream, but an emerging reality with the potential to redefine standards of care across multiple medical fields.

Yet, despite the promising data, many in the medical profession pushed back hard against Musk’s timeline and claims of inevitable robotic superiority. A prominent neurosurgeon took to X to challenge Musk, writing, “As a neurosurgeon, I promise you that no ‘robot’ surgeon can EVER autonomously perform brain and spine surgery—or likely any surgeries—effectively, appropriately, or safely. There are too many variables requiring critical thinking. Robots lack the compassion and ethical judgment of a human surgeon who cares for patients beyond algorithmic compliance.”
This statement underscores a key concern voiced by many experts: the irreplaceable role of human judgment, experience, and emotional intelligence in medicine. Surgery—especially in complex specialties like neurosurgery—often demands split-second decisions, creative problem-solving, and an ethical compass that no code or machine can replicate.

Another surgeon added nuance to the debate, noting that while robots may soon outperform humans in standardized, repetitive procedures, they fall short when unexpected complications arise. “It’s not that simple. For standardized, well-documented procedures, robots will soon outperform surgeons in speed, accuracy, and efficiency. But the human body is not a machine, and unexpected complications arise constantly. Solving these problems requires creativity—a skill robots are far from mastering,” the surgeon explained.
This perspective points to a hybrid future, where robots handle the mechanical and predictable aspects of surgery, while human surgeons step in when unpredictability strikes. Yet Musk’s sweeping prediction of robotic domination leaves little room for such middle-ground interpretations, fueling even greater debate.
