Dalton Knecht Returns to Lakers Summer League with More to ProveLOS ANGELES – As the Los Angeles Lakers gear up for NBA Summer League action at the California Classic this Saturday, all eyes are on two familiar faces: Bronny James and Dalton Knecht. Both players are entering their second summer league campaign, but this time, they return with a year of NBA experience and a renewed sense of purpose.

For Dalton Knecht, the journey back to Summer League has been anything but straightforward. Last season, the rookie sharpshooter found himself at the center of trade rumors, nearly heading to the Charlotte Hornets. The deal ultimately fell through due to the Lakers’ concerns about Hornets center Mark Williams’ health, leaving Knecht in a delicate situation. Yet, despite the uncertainty, the first-year pro displayed remarkable poise and maturity—traits that have quickly earned him respect within the organization.

Now, with his sophomore season on the horizon, Knecht is determined to expand his game. He knows defenders will be closing out hard on his lethal three-point shot, so he’s focused on becoming more versatile—attacking off the dribble, pulling up from midrange, and creating opportunities for his teammates.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Dalton Knecht (4) shoots against the Philadelphia 76ers during the second quarter at Wells Fargo Center.

“Teams are going to run me off the line, so I have to attack the rim, take some midrange shots, floaters, and finish at the basket,” Knecht shared after a recent Lakers practice. “I want to play out of pick and rolls, not just for my own shot, but to find my teammates—throwing lobs to my bigs and getting others open.”

Last season, Knecht proved his shooting prowess, hitting nearly 37 percent on catch-and-shoot opportunities and an impressive 43 percent on pull-up jumpers, according to NBA stats. The challenge now is to leverage those skills more consistently when defenders chase him off the arc.

In his rookie campaign, Knecht played in 78 games—including 16 starts—averaging over 19 minutes, 9.1 points, and 2.8 rebounds per game. He shot a solid 46.1 percent from the field, 37.6 percent from deep, and 76.2 percent from the free-throw line. He made an immediate impact in the Lakers’ rotation, even exploding for a career-high 37 points in just his 14th NBA game. However, his role fluctuated, especially after the failed Hornets trade, and by playoff time, he found himself out of the rotation.

Still, Knecht has shown he belongs in the league. His name has surfaced in trade rumors again this summer, with teams like the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors reportedly interested. Yet, with the Lakers’ recent signing of Jake LaRavia, the future remains uncertain.

One thing is clear: Dalton Knecht has real value in the NBA. With another shot at Summer League, he’s ready to showcase his growth and prove why the Lakers need him as they chase another championship run.
